They introduce an awesome pet phoenix for Spike during exactly 12 seconds before the end of an episode, then they never mention him again, and when he's FINALLY acknowledged again in an episode, he's already given away to his parents, and all what we get is exactly 5 pictures that appear for 12 seconds to tell us about his story, so the writers won't have to bother ever mentioning him again in any future episode.
